High Cholesterol Food Avoidance

If you have high cholesterol levels in your body it is very important to reduce the amount of cholesterol in your diet. Cutting down on the number and amount of high cholesterol food you eat is the easiest way to do that. You should replace it with healthieroptions, preferably with foods that are low in cholesterol. You might also consider not just making changes to your diet but also talking medication that helps to process those high cholesterol foods once they are in your system. You can improve the way your body digests food with some changes in your diet and by taking cholesterol medication prescribed by your doctor. However, medication should be considered a last resort and may not be necessary with sufficent changes in your eating habits.

A diet that contains a lot of high high cholesterol food is usually high in saturated fats, so this is always the best place to start. Look at the fatty foods you eat on a regular basis and consider removing them. Eating other foods that are high in cholesterol also helps to raise the level of cholesterol in your diet, of course, but it is the saturated fats that are actually most harmful in terms of a high cholesterol food. It may sound confusing at first, but with a little look at the foods we eat that are high in saturated fats it will become clearer as to what the connection is. A careful dietary change to lower the levels of both food types is beneficial.

Replacing The Saturated Fats

Some of the most popular types of high cholesterol food don't seem so bad at first but a closer look at their content actually reveals a shocking amount of cholesterol. One boiled egg, for example, has about 225mg of cholesterol in it. Butter, cream cheese, cheddar cheese and ice cream are all high in cholesterol as well. While that may be disappointing to hear you have to decide which is more important - your long term health or the short term pleasures of eating "naughty but nice" foods. Other foods high in cholesterol are things like lamb, beef, steak and fatty meats generally as these proteins add up to more cholesterol for your body. Taking a good look at the amount of these food types in your diet can be a good lesson in controlling your food intake.

Avoiding high cholesterol food is one part of the equation. Another part is eating more foods that are low in cholesterol. These foods include vegetables, fruit, grains, nuts, seeds, and the use of vegetable oil as opposed to animal fats. Adding more of these foods to your diet whilst reducing the level of the high cholesterol food types will help lower your overall cholesterol levels. Cutting down on the dangerous saturated fats will lead to a fitter healthier you.

Cholesterol Medication

Posted by bunches on 26th February 2007

Selecting The Right Cholesterol Medication

If you have found out that your cholesterol levels are high your physician is likely to give you cholesterol medication to safe guard your life and bring your cholesterol level back to a healthy point. This is especially so if your cardiac health shows deterioration. Alongside choelsterol medication you may well be asked to make lifestyle changes which will contribute to the lowering of cholesterol levels to  within safe limits. You need the right cholesterol medication but changing your lifestyle and eating the right kind of food is equally important to your health. By doing this there is no reason why your blood cholesterol level shouldn't come down and improve your health.

A problem with cholesterol medication is that it can be very expensive. It can also feature a host of side effects that may be problematic soas with any medication, always consult a doctor before you taking it. If you notice side effects you may need to stop taking the medication and you should go to your doctor right away. Take his advice on whether or not you should continue taking your choelsterol medication. It is also important to follow all the instructions on the medication itself so that you can prevent any problems that may arise from improperly taking your medication.

Which is the right type of drug for you?

Of all the usual types of drugs prescribed for reducing high levels of cholesterol statin drugs are often the recommended cholesterol medication. These drugs are known to effectively reduce the cholesterol levels in the people that take them but they are also known to have an extensive list of side effects. Many doctors also prescribe an enzyme supplement if you are taking statin drugs because they have been associated with depletion of enzyme Co-Q which can lead to heart problems.

Another type of cholesterol medication that physicians often prescribe in order to control high cholesterol levels is a bile acid sequestrate that helps to control the bile acids secreted in the gall bladder and the liver. It works by softening the fatty ingredients of food in the intestine. This also helps the food to be better absorbed. The majority of the bile acids are then reabsorbed through the liver and through the intestines where they are processed as normal bile.

No matter which cholesterol medication your doctor prescribes remember that you need to make lifestyle changes too in order to permanently achieve and maintain a healthy cholesterol level.

Home Cholesterol Test

Posted by bunches on 26th February 2007

How Reliable Are the Results of a Home Cholesterol Test?

The results produced by a Home cholesterol test kit like the results of many other types of home testing kits are not always accurate. The problem is usually in the application and not in the kit itself. Although the home cholesterol test has the potential to provide accurate results it often doesn't do so because it is amministered incorrectly. Also, mistakes occur when the test is taken at the wrong time. Ironically however, the home cholesterol test can actually give accurate results if done properly.

How good is the Home Cholesterol Testing Kit?

If you go to a doctor with the results of a home cholesterol test he is more than likely going to ask you to take another test and this time from the lab. They will not usually rely on a home cholesterol test because of the likelihood of administration errors. Only when the lab tests results come will they proceed with the treatment. It is not surprising that doctors generally don't trust the results the home cholesterol test despite the test itself being accurate. Obviously it is important that your treatment starts with the right cholesterol readings.

Doctors do want to take a chance because it might so happen that someone ends up taking cholesterol medication and he never even had cholesterol problems in the first place. This is why doctors usually do not take into consideration the results of any home kit when it comes to serious afflictions like high cholesterol, diabetes, etc.

However, if you have a home physician who is willing to carry out the home cholesterol test on your behalf then the test can be safely and accurately carried out at home. This makes sense because even after the test is done you would need a doctor to interpret the results anyway. That is why you might as well take a lab test rather than a home cholesterol test in the first place. The latter would only be useful when there is a doctor close by who can guide in administering it as well as in reading the results correctly.

So, even if you have taken a home cholesterol test be prepared for the test to be repeated in a lab. This way, if your home test results are wrong, you will know before you have to undergo any treatment and so avoid the treatment being based on wrong premise.

You can use a home cholesterol test kit as often as you like, especially if you suffer from a high cholesterol problem, but remember, in order to get accurate results you need to follow the instructions exactly as they written on the packet. Then confirm the report from a lab before taking medication. Never take the results of a home cholesterol test report as final.

Low Cholesterol Food

How To Distinguish Low Cholesterol Food

Those of use who suffer from high cholestrol would do well to learn how we can change our diet to include more low cholesterol foods and fewer high fat foods in order to lower our overall cholesterol levels. Information about low cholesterol foods is needed in order to plan a diet chart that can reduce high cholesterol levels.

Foods that are low in cholesterol

There are various types of food that can go into the low cholesterol group so there is a possibility that the foods you love may be in this list. THis means that you will not have to forego them. However, one of the leading causes of high cholesterol is saturated fat and so you should try to remove any and all foods that contain a high amount of saturated fat from your diet.

Eggs, poultry, meat, cheese and milk all come from animals and all contain cholesterol. In fact, part of the cell membrane structure of all types of cells in animals is made up of cholesterol. If you remove the skin from a chicken, for example, you will also be removing most of the fat. However, it will only remove some and not all of the cholesterol.

Animal cells contain cholesterol to much the same extent no matter what animal they are found in. So although the fat content of any animal muscle may vary widely between fish, chicken, turkey, beef, and pork  they all have relatively equal amounts of cholesterol.

In the case of dairy products however, the fat content decides how much cholesterol there will be. Milk is secreted from animal cells and so it is not made up of cells like meat is. Therefore, it has no cholesterol-containing cell membranes but because cholesterol is fat soluble it stays with the fats in milk and milk-based foods. Therefore, all in all, the more fat a dairy product contains, the more cholesterol it will also contain so this needs to be taken into consideration when you are thinking about low cholesterol food.

From the foregoing facts you can see that animal foods tend to be high in cholesterol. Use this information to help you create a diet that will improve your health. Eat lots of low cholesterol food and cut down on saturated fights for a diet that is healthy.

Normal Cholesterol Level

Posted by bunches on 26th February 2007

How to Maintain a Normal Cholesterol Level

You have considerably more chance of living a long and healthy life if you can maintain a normal cholesterol level in your body. But what is cholesterol and is it always bad? Actually no, not all cholesterol is bad for you. There is good health-friendly cholesterol too. It is called HDL or High-density Lipoprotein. HDL moves cholesterol to the liver and away from the arteries. Once in the liver it is broken down into harmless components. Research studies conducted into the different types of cholesterol suggest that with every unit decrease in bad cholesterol, the risk of heart disease is also reduced by twice the percentage.

Control Your Diet to Maintain a Normal Cholesterol Level

Remember the old saying, “Take an apple a day to keep the doctor away”. The fact is, there is enough provided by nature to keep us healthy and if a person takes care, then a doctor will be hardly needed. If our diets were balanced as they were meant to be, there would be far fewer health issues. However, our diets often include high levels of meat and saturated fats that contain high levels of the bad cholesterol. Some examples of these types of food are, shell-fish, eggs (emphasis on the yolk), beef steak and so on.

So, first ensure that you have a normal cholesterol level and if you can achieve this you can go ahead and enjoy eating such food from time to time. You should never overdo it. A normal cholesterol level will get imbalanced when high fat foods become the rule instead of the exception.

There is no need to turn into a veggie but eating too much greasy non-veg food daily for a long time will surely affect the health. And when such a person falls sick, they tend to stay sick for longer. This is why one should always endeavor to maintain a proper diet as a matter of habit which, in turn, will help maintain a normal cholesterol level in the body.

Eat a lot of foods rich in anti-oxidants and vitamins and you should be on your way to sound health. You will be able to maintain a normal cholesterol level with the help of food which contains niacin (reputed to increase HDL or the good cholesterol). Taken with moderate exercise it can be highly beneficial.

But everyone doesn't want to follow a strict regimen and or exercise. They can turn to some useful drugs like statins that stop the human body from producing cholesterol. This way the drugs help to stop the occurrence of heart conditions. However, statins are liable to cause serious damage to the liver in certain cases and therefore, should only be administered only under the guidance of a physician. So better to achieve a normal cholesterol level by eating a diet rich in vitamins, minerals and leafy green vegetables and making the effort to do regular and light physical exercise.
