Low Cholesterol

Tackling Your Low Cholesterol

It may not seem to be as much fun to live with low cholesterol. You will have to integrate a whole world of new dietary options in order to keep it low and you will have to change the way you live to include the horror of horrors: exercise. With these changes, you may wonder how you will ever change your lifestyle at all. You may be curious as to how, with so much pressure on your health, you will be able to participate in any semblance of life ever again. The truth is that with due diligence and a support group of friends you will find your life enriched to levels that you never thought possible with low cholesterol.

Amazingly enough, there are dangers for having too much low cholesterol in your body. If you have too little cholesterol, you are in line for a whole new situation and risk with the problem your body will create. A lot of medical tests find that those with lower cholesterol levels than normal in their bodies often are more susceptible to depression and other similar problems. Anxiety and stroke are also possibilities from having too little cholesterol in your body, so be careful as to keep your levels in the normal range and consult with your doctor with any questions as to what that normal range is for you.

Learning To Balance Properly

A good way to start getting a low cholesterol diet going is to eat less of the foods that you know are harmful. Many of us are blessed with good sense and we do know that when we eat four meals of McDonald’s a week that it is probably not the best thing for our cholesterol levels. The foods like that are high in saturated fats and do us no favours in terms of keeping our levels reasonable. Cutting out those fast food trips or at least reducing them to a reasonable degree is a good place to start if you intend to have low cholesterol.

You should also consult your doctor for medication. There may be a type of medication that could work with your health situation that could help you get low cholesterol. Coupled with a dietary change, you can use the medication to introduce a different path for the food to take in your body or change the absorption techniques that the liver has with various enzymes. A good way to get started is to check with your doctor as to your possible options.

Primary Cause of High Cholesterol

Posted by bunches on 6th September 2007

If you are looking for one main cause of high cholesterol, then you are in for a big surprise, because there is more than one and each of them is as important as the other. Cholesterol causes can be divided into two types: ones you can control and ones you can't.

Causes of High Cholesterol That You Cannot Control

There are always things that you can and cannot help. In this case, there are causes that are beyond your power to control, such as your age, gender, and genes. You cannot help it if you are a male and by default fall into the high category of bad cholesterol; you cannot help it if you are growing old and slowly building up cholesterol because of your increasing age; and lastly, you cannot help it if you carry the bad cholesterol genes causing the liver to produce more than the required amount of cholesterol.

Men usually have higher cholesterol levels than women until age fifty, after which women overtake men in the reading of cholesterol. However, because men tend to have cholesterol from their thirties onwards, the medical guidelines have put them in the higher danger bracket.

Causes of High Cholesterol That Can Be Controlled

There are always some parameters by which you can control your health. With cholesterol, the parameters usually converge upon your intake and the way you treat your body. Hence, the major areas that you can help are in your diet, weight, stress level, and the amount of intoxicants you take (smoking, alcohol, etc).

Diet is the most important factor and the most powerful for controlling cholesterol. Today it is not difficult to adopt a cholesterol free diet because the market is full of products that will help you keep your body cholesterol free.  If the diet is healthy you will have 90% of the battle won. The last 10% will depend upon the other factors.

Now, if you maintain a cholesterol free diet, your weight will also be in control. But if you are already overweight and are trying to control your diet, then you will have to take the advice and help of a nutritionist and/or medical practitioner to reduce your weight to the acceptable limits. Being overweight is one of the main causes for compounding heart problems.

Cholesterol Medicine

Cholesterol Medicine on Presciption

The way many of us eat today leads to health problems resulting from a high fat diet which could result in you needing to take a cholesterol medicine. High cholesterol contributes to problems with heart disease which can lead to heart attacks. All the cholesterol your body needs is manufactured in your liver and this cholesterol helps to produce and maintain cells, insulate nerves and create hormones. It also helps your body to digest fat. The cholesterol you don’t need comes from your food.

Lifestyle Effects Cholesterol Levels

Meat and dairy products contain cholesterol and any other foods that contain saturated or trans fats will likely increase your cholesterol levels. Exercise helps lower bad cholesterol whilst increasing good cholesterol and smoking will make cholesterol problems worse. So some simple lifestyle choices can help lower your cholesterol levels. Unfortunately, however, not all cholesterol improvements are within your control.

Certain medical conditions like diabetes will make cholesterol problems worse. Some medicines will do the same and there isn’t much you can do to change your inherited disposition. If your cholesterol levels are high and it is not within your control to reduce them, your doctor will probably prescribe a cholesterol medicine.

Cholesterol Medicines

Different types of cholesterol medicine can be very effective combined with diet and exercise to lower cholesterol levels. These are mostly statins, niacin, bile-acid resins or fibric acid derivatives. Statins work by blocking the production of cholesterol in your liver so that bad cholesterol and triglycerides are lowered and good cholesterol can be increased.

If you need cholesterol medicine your doctor is most likely to prescribe a statin. However, you will need to watch for side effects such as intestinal problems and muscle tenderness. A small number of people can also suffer liver damage.

Niacin or nicotinic acid is a vitamin from the B group. This cholesterol medicine is a natural ingredient found in some food and is occasionally added to manufactured foods. Higher doses can be prescribed. Niacin lowers bad cholesterol and raises good cholesterol. Side effects can include flushing, itching, tingling and headache.

Bile-acid resins work within the intestine. Cholesterol and bile are both made in the liver and bile is largely composed of cholesterol. Ideally, your body should make good cholesterol, incorporate it into the bile which travels into the intestine and is reabsorbed for distribution throughout the bloodstream. Bile-acid resins bind to bile to prevent its reabsorption. Side effects are constipation, gas and stomach upset. Fibrates limit production of triglycerides and can help increase good cholesterol.

Side effects of all cholesterol medicine include digestive problems, allergic reactions and muscle aches. The most dangerous side effects are often indicated by muscle aches. See your doctor about them immediately. You shouldn’t take more than one kind of cholesterol medicine at any time or take them if you are taking anticoagulants. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can also interfere with the metabolization of cholesterol medicine. Over the long term effective cholesterol medicine can help you maintain a healthy life but should only be taken under supervision and with a prescription from your doctor.
